Or, turn off Wi-Fi to improve security or save on electricity. Turning Wi-Fi off is fairly simple. Because there are many different devices that use Wi-Fi, make sure you identify what you want to do before turning things off or unplugging power cables.
Before you turn off your Wi-Fi, decide why you want to turn it off. This will determine the best method for disabling Wi-Fi.

Reasons to turn off Wi-Fi include the cost and affordability of the service, the need for a Wi-Fi connection, or the security issues with a Wi-Fi connection. You may not need to disable your Wi-Fi, hiding it from others could solve the problem. Disabling Wi-Fi does not reduce the price of your internet bill. If you want to disable your internet service, and not just turn off the Wi-Fi signal on your device or network, contact your internet service provider ISP. The only way to stop paying for internet service is to contact your ISP and discontinue the service.
Turn off or disable the router wireless signal if you're not using it. Some homes don't have any wireless devices and a wireless signal in these cases serves no purpose. Another reason to disable Wi-Fi is when the network has a slow Wi-Fi connection. When Wi-Fi is slow, turn off the Wi-Fi on your tablet or phone and use your mobile carrier's network for faster speeds. To keep your Wi-Fi on and have better security, change the wireless password to something more secure and block unknown devices by setting up MAC address filtering.
Another option for increased security instead of disabling Wi-Fi from the router is to disable it from the device.Excel sha256 macro
For example, if you use your phone or tablet in a hotel or coffee shop and are concerned that someone nearby may be snooping on your internet traffic, disable Wi-Fi on the device to make sure that none of your data is transferred through the network. If you don't want to disable Wi-Fi from your router but instead want to hide it so that it's hard for someone to connect to your network, hide the SSID, which is the name of your network. Hiding the SSID makes it difficult for uninvited guests to find and connect to your network.
The Wi-Fi settings on some wireless devices are easier to control than others. However, while the options may be slightly different on some devices, the Wi-Fi settings are usually found in a similar place or under similarly named menus. This stops the computer from connecting to Wi-Fi until you re-enable it. Another option is to disconnect from the Wi-Fi network from the Windows taskbar; look for the network icon, choose the network you're on, then disconnect from it.
Laptops usually have a physical Wi-Fi switch on the front or side that if turned to the off position, physically shuts off the Wi-Fi antenna, which is the same as disabling Wi-Fi through Control Panel.
Move the switch to the On position to turn Wi-Fi back on. Some computers have the option to turn off Wi-Fi with a key combination, which typically involves a function key on the top row.
Look on the keyboard for a key with a wireless icon, then press either the Fn or Shift key and the wireless key to turn the Wi-Fi connection on and off. Smartphones provide a software switch in the Settings app that turns Wi-Fi off.
Some routers have a physical button that turns off the Wi-Fi. If your router does, press it to immediately shut down the wireless signal. If that's not how your router is built, access the administrative console to turn Wi-Fi off. The process isn't the same for every router. If your router lacks a built-in feature to turn off Wi-Fi, fully powering down the unit will turn off Wi-Fi.Joinsubscribers and get a daily digest of news, geek trivia, and our feature articles.
More and more new devices are using Wi-Fi Direct. Wi-Fi Direct allows two devices to establish a direct, peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connection without requiring a wireless router. Wi-Fi becomes a way of communicating wirelessly, like Bluetooth.
However, unlike an ad-hoc Wi-Fi connection, Wi-Fi Direct includes an easier way to automatically discover nearby devices and connect to them.Vex gyro
You may already have a device using Wi-Fi Direct. For example, the Roku 3 comes with a remote control that it communicates with using Wi-Fi Direct rather than using an older IR blaster or Bluetooth connection. Instead, the Roku creates a new Wi-Fi network that the remote control connects to, and the two communicate over their own little network.
The security key is automatically negotiated between the remote control and the Roku. This gives devices an easy way to communicate with each other using standard Wi-Fi protocols. At no point do you have to enter your Wi-Fi passphrase into the remote control, as the connection process happens automatically.
Peripherals, such as mice and keyboards, could also communicate via Wi-Fi Direct. Wi-Fi Direct could be used to remotely connect to a wireless printer without requiring the printer to join an existing wireless network.
Android also includes built-in support for Wi-Fi Direct, although few applications are using it just yet. Many devices are already using Wi-Fi with built-in Wi-Fi radios.002 : Enable / Disable Wifi Programmatically - Android WiFi Direct Tutorial
Rather than build in different hardware, such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Direct allows them to communicate wirelessly without requiring any additional specialized hardware.
It adds additional functionality without requiring different hardware. Wi-Fi Direct devices connect directly to each other rather than through a wireless router. But what can you actually use Wi-Fi Direct for at the moment? The Roku 3 does this, as we mentioned above.
For example, you may have two new laptops, each advertised as supporting Wi-Fi Direct.
When and How to Turn off Wi-Fi
In the future, this may become a more useful standard. For devices that require less power, Bluetooth Low Energy will be superior — but Wi-Fi Direct has a fighting chance against higher-powered Bluetooth devices. Image Credit: miniyo73 on Flickr. I rooted my cellphone and added android. I can see the WiFi Direct option in my Settings. Once it reaches discoverPeersWifiP2pManager. ActionListener returns 'Discovery Failed : reason Code is 0'. I don't know what happened. Does anybody know how to enable WiFi Direct for my phone? Or is it impossible?
Very possibly my solution has nothing to do with the real problem of this person, but the topic is the same, so I consider this answer may help someone:. Not all devices have 5Ghz support and, even having it, they may choose the 2,4Ghz band, since they may have bad signal at their current spot for the 5Ghz.
The point is that if you are accessing your LAN from a different AP, or using different bands in the same AP with each device, your devices won't be able to use wifi-direct without engaging an adhoc connection between them, thus they will disable the wifi connection to your AP.
